Les Munro, the only Dambuster pilot still alive, shows no sign of slowing down now that he has reached his 90s. According to the Christchurch Press, last week he sat at the controls of a Dakota DC3 shortly after a 30 minute flight over Christchurch with a group of other 2nd World War veterans.
The vintage aircraft obviously brought back memories, as he commended the flight because he ‘could listen to the motors’ and get a sense of flying in a machine.
Les has always been an active sort. He went back to farming after the war, as well as being active in local politics. It’s good to see that he still has plenty of get up and go. Could the next gig for the nonagenerian be a cameo in the remake of THAT FILM, still ‘in development’ elsewhere in The Land of the Great White Cloud?

My father was in Bomber Command 619 & 617 Squadrons – Flight Lieutenant Walter Johnson-Biggs, known as Johnny Biggs. He was a wonderful man and even as he aged his zest for life never left him. He passsed in Feb. 2007. I have his medals of course with his service and release book etc. also a number of photographs of the crews. Having just just read your article in the 70th anniversary souvenir of the Dam Busters it brought back many happy thoughts of him and of some of his buddies. Mike, this really isn’t the place for such a crass comment. Please have some respect. No one who follows this subject here in the UK has forgotten Les Munro. People “rattle on” about Guy Gibson because he led the squadron, so is the most well known, not because he was a pom.

The Air Ministry or even the war museum might be able to help you with the information your looking for regarding your grand-dad – Also there is a book written by Simon Read with a lot of information that you might find very helpful called : ‘THE KILLING SKIES’ published by Spellmount.
